6 Early Warning Signs Your Elevator Is About to Fail — Do Not Wait for Total Breakdown

A full breakdown rarely happens suddenly — the elevator sends signals for weeks before it stops. Learn 6 early signs that require immediate maintenance contact, before they escalate into a total stoppage and a large repair bill.

In most cases we handle, if the owner or HOA had contacted maintenance in the week the first sign appeared, repair cost would have been less than 20% of the post-breakdown repair cost.

The following 6 signs are simple — any daily elevator user can notice them without technical knowledge. If you observe any of them, call maintenance on the same day.

1. Grinding or metallic friction sound

A healthy elevator runs with a steady, quiet sound. Any grinding, friction, or intermittent humming usually indicates lubrication shortage or bearing wear — both lead to motor damage if neglected.

2. Doors lagging on open or close

If the elevator door now closes unusually slowly, or needs a "second press" on the button, this indicates photocell wear or weak door motor. This is the leading cause of total failure in older elevators.

3. Vibration or "jolting" on start or stop

Smooth motion is the first symptom of safety. Any jolt on start, or sudden drop on arrival, points to control system or brake issues — safety matters that cannot be deferred.

4. Buttons not responding on first press

If you need to press a floor button two or three times for it to respond, the issue is rarely the button panel itself — it is the main controller, one of the most expensive components if it fails completely.

5. Burning smell or faint smoke

This is the most serious warning. Any electrical-burn or hot-plastic smell from the machine room or shaft — stop using the elevator immediately and call maintenance. Continued use risks a fire.

6. Stops not flush with the floor

If the elevator stops centimeters off the floor level, that is an immediate tripping hazard for seniors and children, and a sign of wear in limit switches or arrival-speed control.

Golden rule: Do not use a suspect elevator

If two or more of the above signs appear at the same time, stop using the elevator for children, seniors, and pregnant women until maintenance arrives and performs a full inspection.
